What Is a Reasonable Suspicion Testing?

Reasonable suspicion drug testing is initiated when a trained supervisor observes specific, articulable physical or behavioral signs suggesting an employee may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at work. Under DOT regulations, reasonable suspicion testing must be based on contemporaneous, specific, articulable observations by a trained supervisor — not rumor or hearsay. Common indicators include slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, impaired coordination, unusual behavior, or the smell of alcohol. Two supervisors are required to document the observations for DOT-regulated employees. Collection must happen quickly — typically within two hours for alcohol and eight hours for drugs.

How It Works

1
Supervisor Documents Observations
The supervisor writes down specific, observable signs and behaviors — as required by DOT or company policy. Two supervisors are recommended for DOT employees.
2
Call SafeTouch Immediately
Contact us at (410) 881-7444. Time is critical — especially for alcohol testing.
3
Transport Employee to Collection
The supervisor or a designated company representative must accompany the employee to our collection site — do not allow the employee to drive.
4
Urine and/or Breath Alcohol Collection
We collect the required specimens per your company's policy or DOT requirements.
5
Results and Documentation
Results are returned to your HR team with full documentation for any disciplinary or legal proceedings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is authorized to send an employee for reasonable suspicion testing?
Only a supervisor or manager who has received reasonable suspicion training can authorize this test — not co-workers, not anonymous tips. For DOT-regulated employees, the supervisor must have completed DOT-required reasonable suspicion training. SafeTouch can help coordinate supervisor training programs for your company.
What specific behaviors justify a reasonable suspicion referral?
Concrete, observable indicators include: slurred speech, bloodshot or glassy eyes, impaired balance or coordination, unusual behavior or agitation, the odor of alcohol or marijuana, excessive drowsiness, confusion, or erratic actions. Hunches alone are not sufficient — the observation must be specific and articulable.
Must the supervisor document their observations?
Yes — always. Documentation should be written as soon as possible after the observations and must describe specific behaviors and physical signs with times and dates. For DOT-regulated employees, two trained supervisors are required to sign the documentation. This record is essential if the employee challenges the test.
What happens if the reasonable suspicion test comes back negative?
A negative result means no confirmed drug use was detected — but it does not necessarily mean the employee was not impaired. The employer should still document the incident and address the concerning behavior through normal HR processes. Reasonable suspicion of alcohol must be tested within 2 hours to remain legally defensible.
