What Is a Pre-Employment Testing?

Pre-employment drug testing screens job candidates for the presence of illegal substances or misuse of prescription drugs before they begin work. It is one of the most common risk management tools for employers. A condition-of-employment drug test sends a clear message about your company's drug-free workplace policy and helps you avoid the costs associated with impaired employees: higher accident rates, absenteeism, workers' compensation claims, and reduced productivity. SafeTouch Enterprise offers pre-employment urine, oral fluid, and hair follicle testing for both DOT and non-DOT programs.

How It Works

1
Set Up Your Employer Account
Contact SafeTouch to establish an employer account. We will help you choose the right panel and testing method for your industry and needs.
2
Issue Authorization to Candidate
You provide the candidate with a testing authorization (we supply templates). They bring it to our collection site.
3
Candidate Collection
The candidate comes to our Baltimore location or we arrange mobile collection. No appointment needed for established accounts.
4
Rapid or Lab-Based Results
Choose rapid on-site results or standard laboratory analysis — we match the method to your hiring timeline.

Final results — reported by a Medical Review Officer — are delivered securely to your designated HR contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

When in the hiring process should a pre-employment drug test be ordered?
Best practice is to make a conditional job offer first, then require the drug test before the employee's start date. The test should be ordered as close to the start date as possible to reduce the time between testing and beginning work.
How do results get sent to my company?
Results are reported securely to your designated HR contact or to your employer account on file with SafeTouch. For established accounts, you can designate specific contacts and preferred delivery methods. MRO-reviewed results are delivered electronically.
What if a candidate refuses to take the drug test?
A refusal to test is treated the same as a positive result in most employer drug-free workplace policies and under DOT regulations. You may withdraw the conditional offer of employment. Be sure your policy clearly states this consequence in your offer letter.
Can a pre-employment positive result be contested?
Yes. If the MRO determines a positive is confirmed, the employee may request that the split specimen (Specimen B) be sent to a second SAMHSA-certified lab for independent testing. This is the standard federal challenge process and must be completed within 72 hours of notification.
