What Is a Hair Follicle Drug Test?
A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair — typically 90–120 strands cut from the back of the scalp near the crown — to detect drug metabolites deposited in the hair shaft as it grows. Since hair grows approximately 0.5 inches per month, a 1.5-inch sample provides a 90-day window of drug use history. Hair follicle testing detects marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, methamphetamine, PCP, and ecstasy with high accuracy. It cannot be defeated by shampoos, detox products, or short-term abstinence. Body hair can be used as an alternative if head hair is insufficient.
